Glowing skin is the stuff legends are made of, wars were started, and mythologies were created. Well, all of that and a celebrity or two… No one likes pimples, blackheads and redness, so why do these beautiful famous people have amazing skin and some of the rest us struggle? The answer is “A skin-care plan”. You too can have legendary glowing skin and a flawless face, with only a little bit of effort.

1 – The best advice for healthy skin? Eat right.

A good diet free of processed foods will help a lot of skin ailments and will most certainly give you a great foundation to start from. The top vitamins for glowing skin is Vitamins B, C, D. Vitamin C gives you a bright complexion, Vitamin B helps your skin regenerate and slows the aging process, while good ol’ Vitamin D helps prevent your skin from breaking out. However, you can’t just pop a pill and wake up with a flawless complexion. You should be eating quantities of nutrient rich superfoods such as kale, cucumber, ginger and beetroot to get them into your diet naturally. (For more information, look for our post on the Rainbow Diet!)

2 – Slip, Slop, and Slap.

It’s not just a whimsical campaign from when we were kids, its solid advice on getting great skin. It’s proven that the sun is absolutely ravaging to the skin, and it’s not just sunspots and rapid aging, it’s also the matter of life and death. Australians have the highest incidence and mortality of skin cancer in the world and it’s a serious issue. Don’t equate a “golden tan” with “glowing skin”. If you must tan, consider creams, bronzers, or even sprays. Don’t even think about that tanning bed. When you are outside, use a zinc-based sunscreen and cover up with your sleeves, hat and sunnies. Don’t forget about driving too, you can get sunburnt on a long drive home! Glass filters out the beneficial UVB rays and instead leaves you with UVA and UVC, the very rays that age us and cause cancers.

3 – Get cleaning!

No, we won’t lecture you on the state of your bathroom, or how high the “clean, but not clean enough to put away” laundry pile is. We want you to remember to clean your makeup brushes and sponges. The tools are smashed against your face collecting bacteria, dirt and dust and just spreading it around every time you use them. Get into the habit of washing your foundation and liquids tools once a week, and every two to three weeks on your loose powder brushes. All you need is a little shampoo and water. Just mix a few drops and squish around the brush or sponge. Be gentle with the bristles. Rinse with cool water and lay flat to dry. They’ll be ready to use by the next morning. While you’re at it, give your phone a clean too – you don’t want all those nasty oils rubbing back on your cheeks.

4 – You know this next tip was coming – get active!

We all get a little tired of beating the exercise drum, but that coveted healthy glow comes from within. Healthy bodies produce more endorphins that light up your skin and eyes. A body that works out also tends to sleep better. Sleep is the time that your body gets to rejuvenate. If you are sleep deprived, your circulation suffers, your eyes dull, and often this also will affect your carefully planned diet as your body will start craving junk to keep moving.

5 – Get a skin consultation.

Most people are unaware of what kind of skin they actually have. What you think is oily, might be dry skin that is overcompensating. Combination skin with red areas, that could be rosacea. Its best to have a chat with a skin clinician to get the best routine for your skin. Different conditions require different treatments. They will also tell you how to use your products and in what order; you’ve got to cleanse, tone and moisturise! Your clinician will be your best friend as they help change your skin and give the refined benefits that diet and exercise alone simply can’t do. A tailored skin program, along with a healthy diet and exercise, staying out of the sun and lots of water will give you glowing skin and a great outlook.

I hope you found those tips helpful so you can begin to have glowing skin the more you use these tips.
